Paying Short Fiction and Small/Indie Press Markets
These links are going to be added to the resources menu sometime in the not too distant future, but until then enjoy.
This list does not represent a complete list of paying short fiction markets. Specifically, the markets listed had to be open to submission at the time when the list was created and markets which require a subscription or submission fee for a story to be considered were not included. If you are really serious about breaking into the short fiction market, we suggest using The Grinder and/or getting a subscription to doutrope. If you are looking to submit a single story or you are a SFF connoisseur looking to expand your short fiction horizons, this list will serve as a jumping off point. For the purpose of this list, “Professional” markets pay SFWA market rates (.05 cents per word or $50, whichever is greater) even if they are not currently on the SFWA qualifying markets list. While other paying markets pay some amount less than that. Be sure to read the individual submission guidelines for ever market you are interested in before submitting. Not every market falls nicely into one of these three categories. Some small presses produce anthologies and also accept short stories, while some magazines and ezines occasionally print novelette, novella, or serialized novels length works. Some markets pay flat rates which would be qualifying sales for SFWA membership for shorter works, but not longer. Don’t take our word for it; be sure to check submission guidelines on their website. Values are in USD unless otherwise noted. Markets which were not open for submissions at the time this list was compiled are not included.
